- Dracula (Chart IIa)
- There were reports of vampires in Romania, but no evidence Dracula was considered one

- Derivation of the name
----> Romanian: Drac= devil or dragon; ul=the; ea= son a son of the devil

-Father= Vlad II (Vald=king), ruler of Wallachia
+ Received Order of the Dragon from the Holy Roman Emperor (1431)
+ Troops flew flag with dragon nicknamed Dracul
+ Known as a mean ruler, many referring to him as devil as well as dragon when using “drac”

- Dracula known as ruthless ruler, known internationally for his actions
-He needed money to fight Ottoman Turksà coming down on Saxon Germans in Transylvania
+ Many forced to flee, others impaled
+ Confiscated the property of Saxon Germon
+ Some published accounts of the acts Dracula perpetrated
+ Approximately a dozen such accounts remain
+ One source of knowledge of Dracula, Incunabulas (little books)= printed mid 1400s-1500s at the beginning of the printing press

-Folktales giving some idea of ethnic groups’ opinions of Dracula
+ Not written (oral), and changing over time, but still give some sense

- Jannisaries- boy tax- giving youths to Turkey to fight for army
- One jannisary (Konstantin Mihailović) eventually returned to Austro-Hungary, wrote autobiography including tales of battles w/ Dracula leading forces against Turkish

- Dracula ruling for periods of time- gets kicked out by Turks, then coming back to power before leaving for Hungary
- Born 1431, died 1476; ruled 1448, 1456-62, 1476
- Known as Vlad Tepes: Vlad the Impaler
- Known for impalings
- Stern ruler, but meting out justice
- Considered a wise, brave, and just ruler by Romanians

- Motives for actions
+ Revenge against Turks
+ Inter-family feuds (between Danesti and Dracula families)
+ Political enmity
+ Consolidation of Transylvanian commerce
+ Establishment of political community
+ Affirmation of national sovereignty
+ Sexual? (Freudian)

-Romanians see him as HERO, everyone else sees him as cruel
